Groups

Family and friends groups: creating a group, inviting by email, roles, history, replies and deleting messages.

A group is a shared space for your family or friends: a group chat plus a shared calendar, files and, optionally, an email inbox. A family is simply a group; there is no separate family account. Every member’s own Gluon can take part; see Assistants in groups.

  1. Create a group from the chat list or Settings → Family & groups, and give it a name (up to 80 characters) and, if you like, a description (up to 500).
  2. Invite people by email with Invite, beside the member count in the group’s header or on its Info tab. Each invitation is personal: it only works for a Google account with that verified email address.
  3. They sign in to Gluon with that account and accept. Decline uses up the invitation without joining.

Settings → Family & groups lists your groups with your role in each (Owner or Member) and how many members it has; open one to manage it.

Invitations expire after seven days. Sending a new one to the same address replaces the pending one. Forwarding the invitation email to someone else doesn’t let them join. Only the group’s owner sees who was invited and whether the email was delivered.

A group has six tabs:

Tab Holds
Chat The group conversation
Calendar Shared events, reminders and recurring tasks; see Calendar
Drive The group’s files; see Drive
Email The group’s shared inbox, once it has an address; see Email
Expenses Shared expense ledgers, balances and settling up; see Expenses
Info Members, invitations, your Gluon’s settings here, and group settings

Changes made by any member show up for everyone straight away.

  • Mention people and assistants by typing @: @Gluon means your own Gluon.
  • Reply to a message with its Reply button, or swipe it right on a phone.
  • Dictate a message with the microphone beside Send; see Dictation.
  • Search the group’s chat with the search button or ⌘F.

The person who creates the group is its owner; everyone else is a member.

The owner can Every member can
Edit the group’s name and details Chat, mention and reply
Invite and remove members Use the shared calendar, files and inbox
Allow a removed person to rejoin Leave the group
Transfer ownership to another member Turn their own Gluon on or off here
Set the group’s tool permissions and auto trigger
Delete anyone’s messages and stop anyone’s tasks
Pay for the group’s stored files

An owner must transfer ownership before leaving a group that still has other members. When the last member leaves, the group and everything it stored, including its inbox, files, workspace and calendar, are deleted; Leave group says so and asks them to confirm Leave and delete.

In a private chat, your Gluon can do most of what the Info tab does:

  • “Which groups am I in?” lists your groups and any invitations waiting for you, and “Who’s in the cousins group?” shows its members.
  • “Create a group called Cousins”, “Rename it to Diwali 2026” or “Mute the school group for a week”. Creating a group asks you first.
  • “Invite ravi@example.com to Cousins” shows the invitation for you to approve. Inviting always asks, because someone who joins sees the group’s later messages, files, calendar and inbox.
  • “Let my Gluon answer me in Cousins without a mention” or, as the owner, “Turn on auto replies for the group” always asks first, because those replies are paid. Turning them off doesn’t.
  • “Revoke Ravi’s invitation”, “Remove Meera from the group”, “Decline the invitation to Office” or “Leave the book club” ask before they happen.

Gluon only does what your role allows: only the owner renames a group, invites or removes people. In a group’s own chat, @Gluon can manage only that group, and the group’s permissions decide whether it asks; create, invite, turn on auto replies or leave from a private chat. You join a group yourself, from its invitation; handing a group to another member, letting a removed person back and tool permissions stay on the Info tab.

You see the group’s messages from the moment you joined. If you leave or are removed, you lose access; rejoining starts a fresh history from that point. A removed member needs the owner to allow them back and a new invitation.

Messages are limited to 4,000 characters, and each member can send 30 messages a minute in a group. A group can have up to 100 members.

You can delete your own messages and your Gluon’s. The owner can delete any member’s or assistant’s message, and the status line a received email leaves; other status lines, such as a shared artifact’s, stay. A deleted message stays as “Deleted by ”, its text and reactions are removed, and assistants no longer see it.

Copies that already left can’t be recalled: notifications already sent and anything an assistant already read in a reply it was working on.
