Chats
Private chats with your Gluon or your agents, generated titles and renaming, dictation, queued messages and steering, Done and Snooze, searching a chat, what the chat list shows, and asking your Gluon to tidy it.
A chat is a private conversation between you and one of your agents: your own Gluon, or a custom agent. Nobody else can see it. Chats keep every message until you delete them.
Starting a chat
Section titled “Starting a chat”- New in the chat list starts a new chat. Its arrow opens a menu with New chat, New group and New agent.
- Home starts a new chat with your Gluon. The chat is saved when you send the first message.
- Select an agent under Your agents in the chat list to start a chat with it. A chat’s agent is fixed when the chat starts.
- ⌘⇧O (Ctrl+Shift+O) starts a new chat from anywhere.
You can attach up to eight images, 8 MB in total, to a message: PNG, JPEG, WebP or GIF. Large photos are shrunk on your device to 2048 pixels on their longest side before they’re sent, so the limit counts the smaller copy; small images and animations are sent as they are. A message with images shows in the chat as soon as you send it, marked Sending… until its images are stored. If an image can’t be stored, for example because your storage is full, the message goes back into the message box with its images and the reason.
Chat titles
Section titled “Chat titles”A new chat is titled with your first message. When Gluon finishes its first reply, it gives the chat a short title about what you are talking about, and your chat list and the chat’s header show it at once. A small, low-cost model writes it, and it counts in your usage like any other model call. Once the chat has a title like this, later replies don’t change it. If it can’t be written, the chat keeps its title and Gluon tries again after the next reply.
To rename a chat, choose Rename in its row’s menu in the chat list, or ask your Gluon. A title you set is never replaced: if you rename a chat before the first reply finishes, Gluon doesn’t write one.
Dictation
Section titled “Dictation”You can speak a message instead of typing it, in a private chat, on Home before the chat starts, and in a group:
- Select Dictate, the microphone beside Send. The first time, your browser asks to use your microphone.
- Speak. A timer and a waveform show that the microphone hears you. Recording stops by itself after 2 minutes and turns what you said into text.
- Select Done dictating, the tick the microphone turned into, or press Enter when you’re done. Select Cancel dictation (the bin) or press Esc to throw the recording away.
You can also press and hold the microphone, speak, and let go to finish, as with a voice note. While holding, slide left to throw the recording away instead.
The words go into the message box where your cursor was, or in place of the text you’d
selected, with spaces added where they would touch a word. Nothing is sent: read or edit them,
then send them like anything you typed. Attached images stay, @ mentions still work in a
group, and unsent words stay in your draft. Gluon works out which language you speak; there’s
nothing to choose.
Gluon only turns your recording into text: it never stores the recording or sends it with your message. Leaving the chat, switching apps or locking your phone while recording throws it away and turns the microphone off.
Dictation is free. If it doesn’t work:
- Couldn’t hear that: the recording held no speech Gluon could make out. Dismiss it and try again. A recording under half a second or with only silence is ignored.
- Retry: if your connection drops or dictation is unavailable, Gluon keeps the recording, so Retry sends it again without you repeating it. Discard throws it away.
- You’re dictating too often: you reached the dictation limit of 20 recordings a minute, 120 an hour and 500 a day. The note says when to try again; each recording sent, a retry included, counts.
- Gluon can’t use your microphone: your browser blocked it. Allow microphone access for Gluon’s site in your browser’s settings, then try again.
Browsers that can’t record show no microphone.
What the chat list shows
Section titled “What the chat list shows”Each row shows the chat’s title and its latest message as plain text, without formatting
marks such as ** or #. Unread replies are counted. Instead
of the latest message, a row shows what the chat needs, most urgent first:
| Status | Means |
|---|---|
| Approval | A tool call waits for you to approve or deny it |
| Question | Gluon asked you a question and waits for your answer |
| Working | Gluon is replying |
| Failed | The last reply ended in an error; send again to retry |
Search the list by title, or press ⌘K to search chats, groups, agents, pages and settings together.
Sending while Gluon works
Section titled “Sending while Gluon works”You don’t have to wait for a reply to finish:
- Queue: a message you send while Gluon is replying waits above the message box, and goes when the current reply ends. Up to 10 messages can wait. You can edit a waiting message with the pencil or remove it with the trash button.
- Steer: choose Steer on a waiting message, or press ⌘↵ (Ctrl+Enter) instead of Enter, to send it right away. Gluon finishes the tools it is running, then reads your message before continuing.
- Stop: stops the reply and any running tools. Messages you had queued are held; each shows Send so you can decide whether it still goes.
While Gluon waits for an approval or an answer from you, queued messages wait too.
Questions, plans and cards
Section titled “Questions, plans and cards”Gluon can show more than text:
- Questions: Gluon may ask you a question with choices. Pick one, type your own answer or Skip. Sending a new message instead also moves on.
- Plans: for longer work, Gluon shows a checklist of its steps and ticks them off.
- Cards: an answer can be a card: steps, a comparison of two to four options, facts, a chart, a timeline, or a small interactive component. A chart’s values sit behind Show all N values under it.
- Tool steps: each tool Gluon uses appears as a compact row you can open to see its input and result. Once a reply finishes, its steps fold away.
Done and Snooze
Section titled “Done and Snooze”Keep the chat list tidy without deleting anything:
- Mark done moves a chat into the Done section at the bottom of the list.
- Snooze hides it until a time you choose: in 1 hour, in 3 hours, this evening (6 PM),
tomorrow (9 AM) or a custom time up to a year ahead. When it wakes, the chat returns and
you get a “Snoozed:
” reminder. - Reopen brings a done chat back.
Use the row’s menu, the hover buttons on a computer, or swipe a row left on a phone. A chat comes back by itself when something new happens in it, such as a reply finishing or a reminder firing. A chat waiting for your approval or answer cannot be marked done.
Groups have no Done; mute a group instead to stop its notifications. See Notifications.
Searching a chat
Section titled “Searching a chat”Long chats load in pages, so your browser’s own Find misses older messages. Use the search button in the chat’s header, or ⌘F (Ctrl+F), instead:
- Every word you type matches the start of a word, so “pic satur” finds “picnic on Saturday”.
- Enter steps to an older match and Shift+Enter to a newer one; the list shows each match’s sender, time and text.
- Search covers what you can read in the chat, including cards, but not the raw output of tools.
Hover over a message to see when it was sent.
Tasks and the side panel
Section titled “Tasks and the side panel”When Gluon hands work to an agent or waits for something in the background, a task row appears in the chat and a strip above the message box counts the open work, such as “Waiting on 2 tasks · 1 timer”. The side panel’s Tasks tab lists active and finished tasks; open one to see its steps, approve its tool calls or stop it. See Background tasks.
Deleting a chat
Section titled “Deleting a chat”Deleting a chat removes it and its messages. Its background tasks are cancelled, and its attachments move to the trash in Drive, where they can’t be restored. Files in your workspaces and Drive stay.
Ask your Gluon
Section titled “Ask your Gluon”In a private chat, your Gluon can tidy your chat list for you:
- “Which chats have unread replies?” or “Find my chat about the Goa trip” lists your chats with their unread replies and what each waits for.
- “Rename this chat to Weekend plans”, “Mark the Algebra chat done”, “Snooze the Goa trip chat until tomorrow 9 AM”, “Bring it back” or “Mute the Algebra chat for a week” change the chat right away, and your chat list shows it at once.
- “Delete my Goa trip chat” asks you first: approve the card, which names the chat, to delete it.
Your Gluon can’t mark done, snooze or delete the chat you are talking to it in, since its own reply would bring the chat back; use the chat list for that. It only manages your own private chats, never groups, and doesn’t do it from a group.
